Almost 10-hour-long debate ended with the upper house passing the most debatable and controversial bill in recent times. With 125 MPs voting in favour 99 against the bill, Rajya Sabha on Wednesday gave green signal to Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2019 post a hot and crucial debate between Home Minister Amit Shah and Oppositions. According to the Rajya Sabha officials, the house had 223 members present with very less opposition count. Earlier, there was a six-hour-long debate over the bill to be sent a select committee which was ruled out with 125 members voting against it.
The Modi government succeeded in bringing the bill in the second attempt after lacking the numbers in January this year. However, a few of the senior Congress leaders have indicated that the party may move the Supreme Court against the CAB. The bill, which will become law after getting the President’s assent would allow the illegal immigrant for Hindu, Sikh, Parsi, Buddhist and Christian immigrants from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh, who have lived in India without documentation.
