The kind of level at which cybercriminals are operating nowadays has changed astronomically, they have become very advanced. On a shocking note, scamsters used the photo of Delhi CJ as the Display Picture to loot people of money. For some time, it has become a habit of cyber criminals to keep pictures of senior police officers and extort money. Now recently with the picture of CJ, they managed to extort a massive amount of Rs. 2 lakhs.
Satish Chandra, who served as the CJ of the Telangana High Court, was transferred to the Delhi High Court some time ago. To imitate CJ sending a message to Srimannarayana, an officer working as a sub-registrar in the Telangana High Court, they used his photo as a WhatsApp DP.
“I am in a special meeting. I need money urgently. But all my bank cards are blocked. I will send you an Amazon link. Click on it and send gift cards worth Rs. 2 lakh,” the cybercriminals said. They made it look like ‘CJ Justice Satish Chandra sent the message to the sub-registrar.
Thinking CJ was the one who sent him the message, Srimannarayana did as the cybercriminals told him and lost money. After that, there was no response from CJ and when he called the number he realized that he had been cheated when he he tried calling them, the phone said ‘switch-off’. The sub-registrar officer realized that he was duped, and he immediately approached the cyber crime police.
