In a shocking incident which took the eight lives and left nearly 20 injured, a bus plunged into a 100-feet deep gorge in Anantagiri mandal in Visakhapatnam district on Friday evening. The victims who belong to the same extended family are from the Hyderabad and Nalgonda districts of the state.
The family has reportedly hired the bus belonging to a private travel agency and were returning to the city after visiting the valley. While initial speculations were around break failure and condition of the bus, the investigation revealed that it was the negligence of the driver.
According to RTO officials, Srisailam, the driver of the tourist bus with 22 other passengers on board was sleepy while driving and lost control while managing a hairpin curve on the ghat road. It was learnt that a tree amidst the gorge reduced the intensity of the fall reducing the number of deaths.
The injured were rushed to a government hospital at S Kota in the district. Locals rushed to the spot and began rescue operations even before rescue teams had arrived. Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the accident.
