In a startling revelation in the probe over the sensational encounter of gangster Mohammed Nayeemuddeen a.k.a Nayeem, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) gave a clean chit to 25 police officials who allegedly maintained a close relationship with the Maoist-turned-gangster facing at least 17 murder charges and 80 other cases.
Claiming that there was no enough evidence against the accused, SIT on Saturday gave a clean chit to two additional SPs, seven DSPs, 13 CIs, a head constable and two constables. SIT chief Y Nagi Reddy revealed to the Forum for Good Governance, an NGO, that no charge sheet was filed against any of the police officials.
It can be noted that the SIT officials have filed more than 175 charge sheets in the Naeem case. It included the names of eight politicians in more than 130 cases. Nayeemuddeen, the most notorious gangster was killed in an alleged encounter at Shadnagar on Hyderabad outskirts in August 2016.
He and his gang were involved in land settlements, real estate dealings, illegal arms supply and extortions. One of the most sensational cases Nayeem was involved in was the assassination of retired IPS officer KS Vyas in 1993.
