In what can be called as a power move, Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Monday said the Congress Committees in every state will bear the costs of railway tickets of needy migrant labourers who are heading home. In the wake of the controversy over Modi-led government setting fare for the migrants who are struggling to meet the ends, Sonia Gandhi’s decision came as a slap to the BJP cadre which is already in neck-deep criticism over handling crisis.
“The Indian National Congress has, therefore, taken a decision that every Pradesh Congress Committee shall bear the cost for the rail travel of every needy worker and migrant labourer and shall take necessary steps in this regard. This will be the Indian National Congress’ humble contribution in service of our compatriots and to stand shoulder to shoulder in solidarity with them”, Gandhi said in a statement.
Attacking the Centre over the crisis of the migrant labourers stranded in different parts of the country, Sonia said-“Our workers and labourers form the backbone of our economy. They’re hard work and sacrifice are the foundation of our nation.” She also stated that this is the first time that India witnessed a tragedy with such a massive human cost as thousands of migrant workers and labourers were forced to walk home several hundred kilometres on foot- without food, without medicines, without money, without transportation.
It is to the known knowledge that, the Indian Railways had issued a set of guidelines for Shramik Special trains to ferry the migrants stranded across the country. However, the central government announcing that the railways would collect the ticket fare welcome a good deal of flak from the citizen.
