Deciding the fate of 129 candidates, counting of votes for 120 municipalities and nine corporations in Telangana began at 8 am on Saturday. The polling held through paper ballots of January 22nd registered about 70.26 per cent of polling amid tight security. The elections were held for 2,971 wards after councillors to 80 wards and corporators for three divisions have been elected unopposed.
Talking to the media, State Election Commissioner V Nagi Reddy said that all the necessary arrangements were made and tight security was deployed to avoid untoward incidents at the counting centres. While the first results are likely to be out by 10 AM, the final results on an official note will be announced by evening. On the other hand, the ruling TRS which has the edge of holding the government has is hopeful over the clean sweep like the previously held polls, such as Legislative Assembly, Parliament, Zilla Parishad and Mandal Parishad. However, the main opposition Congress has been giving a tough fight for TRS in the majority of the municipalities.
