Makara Sankranthi- The day when the sun rises a little north. The Center is organizing special events to honor this sacred occasion and aims to inspire everyone through various ‘Soorya Namaskaras’. The main purpose of this program is to perform yoga asanas and pay homage to the Sun god. However, there are objections in Jammu and Kashmir.
The Government of Jammu and Kashmir Higher Education Department has recently issued orders regarding sun salutations. The orders said that the Center wanted to conduct a large-scale sun salutation under the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations. Teachers and students were ordered to participate in the event. However, Jammu and Kashmir leaders are incensed over these orders.
Former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has said that such actions are demeaning to Kashmiris. Tweeted that it would be a collective insult. Students and staff were incensed that it was not correct to force them to do sun salutations even if they did not like it.
In response, Omar Abdullah, vice-president of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference, said that celebrating Makar Sankranti was a personal choice. He questioned whether the BJP would be happy if it ordered non-Muslim students to celebrate Eid.
