Tensions ran high at Niloufer Hospital in Hyderabad as the Telangana Junior Doctors Association (T-JUDA) called for a silent boycott over the hospital authorities. It all started with a three-year-old toddler turning positive to the novel Coronavirus. According to a local newspaper reports, 42 people including children and doctors at Niloufer hospital came in contact with a 3-year-old Coronavirus positive child.
The fact that the doctors and other medical staff that attended the child were not wearing any protective gear raised concerns. Reportedly, 16 junior doctors and post-graduate doctors directly came into contact with the child were not provided with N-95 masks and personal protective equipment even after repeated appeals. The doctors also stated that they have sent the child for tests at the neighbouring Cancer hospital which means many others at that hospital too came into contact.
According to the health officials, all of the people speculated to have direct or indirect contact with the child were sent to Gandhi Hospital to take the coronavirus test after the child was confirmed positive. “This incident could mark the first cluster transmission in a healthcare set-up in Hyderabad. We estimate that there were at least 1,000 contacts during the course of those four days,” said one of the junior doctors protesting over the negligence of the hospital authorities.
The child was admitted on 25 March to Niloufer Children hospital with fever and breathlessness and was admitted to the Isolation ward. It was suspected to be community transmission as the kid or the parents didn’t have a travel history.
