While the world is still speculating if a country’s President has the powers to single-handedly withdrew from an international organisation, the U.S ending its affiliations with World Health Organisation(WHO) has come as a jolt in the wake of Corona pandemic.
Speaking on Friday afternoon from the Rose Garden, Trump repeated his accusation that the organization had failed to warn the world of the coronavirus’s dangers in a timely manner due to pressure from Beijing. “Because they have failed to make the requested and greatly needed reforms, we will be today terminating our relationship with the World Health Organization and will be redirecting those funds to other worldwide and deserving urgent public health needs,” he added.
This has triggered a huge political debate across the nation, while a few of senior analysts termed it as more of an act of political theatre than a smart foreign policy move. On the other hand, senior officials at White House confirmed that legal experts are still digging in if a President can single-handedly withdraw from WHO. However, if opined that he could indefinitely freeze money to the body and leave it to Congress to force contributions.
The other version is that the U.S supremo is trying to shirk its responsibilities to the WHO and shift blame for its own uneven virus response. It was also rumoured that the U.S and WHO have had an issue with funds while the health body will lose nearly $900 million is the affliction ends. However, going by the number of analyses, Trump is making the global coronavirus response harder to coordinate taking back from the organisation.
