Promised to bid adieus to the traffic owes at Kanaka Durga Temple, Vijayawada, the much-awaited Kanaka Durga flyover opened for traffic from Friday. After three postponements, Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari on Friday morning virtually inaugurated the flyover while AP CM Jagan Mohan Reddy was present live through video conference.
The 2.6-km six-lane flyover was constructed by Soma Construction Company under the supervision of R&B department using span and wing technology at an estimated cost of Rs 467 crore. While the project’s construction took off in 2016, it passed through numerous hurdles including change in project final design and contractors undertaking the project.
However, the flyover inauguration turned debatable in the state political circles with the ruling and opposition resorting into a verbal tug of war for the credits. While the ruling YSRCP leaders claim that they have wrapped up the construction in just 14 months, the main opposition TDP didn’t take qualms to hit back with their arguments.
According to the TDP, it had played a crucial role in drawing funds from the central government while almost Rs 333.21 crores were spent on the flyover. They also claimed that almost 70 per cent of the construction is completed in their tenure and that YSRCP is all into stealing the credit.
Amidst which BJP government stole the spark stating that the party leaders who are continuously in touch with high command played a crucial role in completing the major projects in the state. It can be recalled that Congress in 2018 staged a protest against the delay in the construction of the flyover.
The virtual meeting set for the inauguration of the two crucial flyovers in the city also witnessed foundation stones laying ceremonies of another 16 projects worth Rs 7,584 crore.
