The story ended up with a rescue operation involving 15-20 police personnel who swung into action with a call from the girls’ friend present there. In a one-hour long rescue operation, the police with the help of local administration and gram panchayat acted swiftly and rescued the girls safely.
It was later revealed that a group of 6-8 girls visited the Pench river in Chhindwara district’s Belkhedi village for a picnic despite restrictions due to the impact of Coronavirus and a ban on the mass gatherings. The girls said that two of them sat on a stone in the middle of the river to get a selfie while the water level of the river rose suddenly and they found themselves trapped.
