Further intensifying the protests against the central government’s decision to privatise the Visakhapatnam steel plant, workers’ unions has reportedly decided to go for a strike from March 25th. Issuing notices for the authorities on the same, the unions were learnt to specify that they will put the production on shut from 25th.
It can be noted that according to the rules the strike notices must be issued fourteen days before calling the strike. The notice issued to the authorities called for the termination of the steel plant’s contract with POSCO.
Earlier, the written reply from the Finance Minister specified that the Cabinet Committee of Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved 100% disinvestment of government holdings in Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL). Further, it also stated that the state has no equity in the steel plant and is only consulted in specific matters as and when needed.
The reply given by the Union Finance Minister in the Lok Sabha is a big blow to the employee unions who intensified their protests on Tuesday. Protestors squatted on the road at Kurmannapalem with placards demanding the withdrawal of the Centre’s decision.
