Narcotics Control Bureau’s probe in connection with the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput has so far brought many Bollywood A-listers names including star actress Deepika Padukone. WhatsApp chats of conversations on banned drugs between Deepika and her manager Karishma in 2017 are now taking Bollywood by storm.
No sooner, rumours that NCB has been retrieving the WhatsApp chats from the suspected celebs numbers through third-party app raised new concerns over the cheating apps secrecy claims. Some have questioned whether Facebook is making a genuine claim that WhatsApp’s privacy is guaranteed by end-to-end encryption, as the chats now turned main evidence for the agency.
Amidst the speculations, WhatsApp in a late-night statement on Thursday claimed that its messages are protected and no third party can access them. “WhatsApp protects your messages with end-to-end encryption so that only you and the person you’re communicating with can read what is sent, and nobody in between can access it, not even WhatsApp. It’s important to remember that people sign up on WhatsApp using only a phone number, and WhatsApp doesn’t have access to your message content,” a WhastApp spokesperson said.
Then how dis NCB access the chats..?
Many believe that the messages were accessed using the mobile phone cloning technique that has been around since 2005. A cloned phone can access WhatsApp back-up chats, which are not encrypted, from wherever they are stored, Google Drive or iCloud. With this, the agencies create what is called a ‘mirror image’ of your phone, and copy and then transfer all the data onto the separate device.
The group chats from Jaya Saha and main accused Rhea Chakraborty are believed to have been retrieved in a similar manner. Agencies can even access deleted messages, since the older messages can still be available on the older backup logs of your phone.
Meanwhile, Deepika Padukone and Shraddha Kapoor are likely to be questioned by NCB on Saturday. Two more actors, Sara Ali Khan and Rakul Preet Singh, have also been summoned by the NCB after they questioned Sushant Rajput’s friend actor Rhea Chakraborty.
