While this has been a topic of debate for years in India, it once again surfaced in the mainstream media after a popular politician made some sensational comments on the practice. If you are wondering who it is, it is – Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray, and if you are thinking about what is it about, it is about playing religious music on loud speakers in Mosques. He asked the state government to remove loudspeakers in mosques, and if not done so, he even warned that the loudspeakers will be placed in front of mosques and that Hanuman Chalisa will be played.
Speaking at a meeting of party workers, he confirmed that he was not against prayers. “You can pray in your house,” he said. He questioned the necessity of loudspeakers in mosques and the reasoning behind playing azaan on loudspeakers disturbing everyone else in society.
Raj Thackeray further demanded an immediate response from the government. They demanded that steps be taken to remove loudspeakers in mosques immediately. He warned that they would put loudspeakers in front of mosques and play Hanuman Chalisa.
They demanded the government immediately abolish the pensions given to MPs and MLAs in the state. He went on to say that if at all the government wants to help someone, they should give houses to the poor. He also questioned why MLAs and MPs are offered houses. He urged the government to take back the farmhouses of the MLAs and MPs first, then give them the houses.
